Hindsight..

  • May. 21st, 2009 at 10:00 AM

...is 20-20 but it doesn't help you avoid the bus in front of you. Know what I mean?

Yeah....so last night I posted what I had hoped would be -everything else- I had in mind about escapism and that movie, "The Tunnel". Oddly enough, it wasn't all. I had had a few beers so this ought not be a huge surprise but that's beside the point.

Final point...honest...no shit...ain't going back. Never.

If you've read the "Barsoom" stuff by Burroughs, have you had the epiphany that I did, where you link the "Gor" stories back to Burroughs by literary DNA? I think that it is possible that "Barsoom" is to "Gor" as, lets say, "Lucy" is to "Homo sapiens sapiens", only more so. Certainly better than T-rex to a pigeon.

What happened was tied to that damn movie....the actor, Richard Dix, made me think about Burroughs 'cause I thought he had been a movie Tarzan. I also thought about the other sci-fi movie of the same period, "Things to come", which was written by H.G. Wells.. Both guys were alive during this time (Wells died in the '40s and Burroughs in the '50s). So, there I am, ruminating on this and that and got to reading Burroughs and, whamo, we have naked ladies (or nearly so) on a distant planet in a different culture with slaves and swords and all sorts of stuff like that and it rang a huge bell, which we will call Quasimodo. Never mind.

ANyhow...if you've read the Barsoom stuff and the Gor stuff, is it possible that one leads from the other?

Speculating on crap like that is what I do while watching old movies at 3am, semi-drunk and unable to actually read a book. Weird? Maybe, but what do you do in like circumstances? Hmm? Yeah...I thought so. Not so weird now, is it bunky? :-P

As of this moment I have not read the Barsoom stuff but you can be I will now! I forced myself through the Gor books, I've read all but two I think. Dubious literary merit aside, they can be fun in the right context. I look forward to being able to discuss this with you in real detail, sounds like it will be really interesting!

Dear Mr Upton Ogood,

I need a book. But not just any book, a book that I can read more than a hundred pages of and not go, 'Damn, I can't be bothered reading more.'

I only read fantasy. No biographies, no amusing tales of an out-of-work performance artist, no historical stuff. I need dragons, magic, hot guys with swords...k?

The last books I really enjoyed were the Belgariad, the Mallorean (and associated one-offs that followed), the Dragonlance series, the Dark sword series, the other dragon series with the different worlds in bubbles that I can't quite think of the title of by Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman, the Magician series, the Sword of truth series, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I've read Eragon and Eldest and am trying to get into Brisingr.

I've been stuck in this book mire for a while now and have just been re-reading the above over and over.

Since you are the 'book man', I thought I'd come to you for advice! Any ideas?

Um...just off the top of my head, how 'bout Anne McCaffrey and her "Dragon Rider" series. I've read the Begariad and Mallorean stuff and liked it all, so, if tastes matter, those stories might work for you. There is also a series that I mentioned recently (that I'm working through as the guy is still churning them out)....his name is S.M. Stirling. I can't recall a tittle just now but I'm sure you can find him.

If you have never read them, the Lensman series is also very good. THey are by E.E. "Doc" Smith. They are somewhat dated, having been written in the '30s (I think) but are very readable.

There was the "Wheel of time" series that got to 11 books but the author had the poor judgement of showing up dead before he finished them...but if that doesn't put you off, that'll get 'er done for awhile.

Ok..that's off the top of my head...if you need me to get a little lower, like my scalp, just say the word. :-)

ps..."Cryptonomicon"...if you like it, then you'll love this guy's other stuff (his name escapes at the mo)

I'm not really a book man..more a leg/tit/ass/face man, although naked is also a favorite. Books just seem to be more available to me lately. :-/

Mr Upton Ogood,

I know you're a leg/tit/ass/face man...I just wanted to pick your scalp :)

I forgot that I'd done the "Wheel of Time" series...I was wondering why there hadn't been any more after book eleven...lol.

Anne Mccaffrey, hey? Ok, will check her out and the Stirling guy.

You are fabulous :)

Yeah...I'm Ab-fab
Way back when (early '70s I think) I also read a series by Fritz Lang called "The Grey Mouser". It was, by my recall, a fairly primitive dungeons & dragons thing, lots of sword and sorcery (which I think was one of the tittles).

I'm still workin' off the top of my head but, if I sleep on it, maybe something will percolate up.

Too bad you don't like historical fiction, one of my favorite writers does that stuff...and then there is all those Horatio Hornblower stories. Ah well...to sleep, perchance to dream of the perfect suggestion.

I asked Felashe..
...and her first thought was: Phillip Pullman..."The subtle knife", etc.
